- IEM recognised top graduate and academic for excellence in engineering
- Awards highlight APU’s focus on developing industry-ready talent and research capability

Asia Pacific University of Technology and Innovation (APU) secured two major wins at the Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM) 67th Annual Dinner and Awards Night, with Mechatronics Engineering graduate Chung Yu Qin receiving the IEM Gold Medal Award 2025 and assistant professor Dr Lau Chee Yong awarded the Presidential Award of Excellence (PAOE).
Held on 18 April 2026, the awards recognise outstanding achievement in Malaysia’s engineering profession, honouring both academic excellence and contributions to the industry.
The IEM Gold Medal is one of the organisation’s top student awards, presented to graduates who demonstrate strong academic performance and professional potential. Chung received the award from IEM president Ir Yau Chau Fong, a testament for his dedication and passion for engineering.
Dr Lau’s Presidential Award of Excellence, conferred by the Electrical Engineering Technical Division (EETD) of IEM, recognises his contributions to research, innovation and engineering education.
APU’s Chief Innovation and Enterprise Officer, professor Dr Vinesh Thiruchelvam, said the recognition reflects the university’s focus on developing capable graduates and advancing engineering talent. “Chung Yu Qin’s Gold Medal demonstrates what students can achieve with the right support, mentorship and opportunities,” he said.
Head of the School of Engineering, Professor Ir Dr Siva Kumar Sivanesan, added that the awards highlight the strength of APU’s engineering programmes and its emphasis on producing industry-ready graduates. “This recognition reflects the quality of our engineering education and our commitment to developing graduates who are technically proficient and professionally prepared,” he said.
The awards highlight APU’s continued emphasis on engineering education, research and industry relevance.
